I followed a couple of suggestions and using the following I am having success with some belt buckles, spoons, shot and coin.

Aluminium foil on a tuperware container
Hot Water just covering the items
2 Spoons Bicarb Soda
3 Tots of Salt Terminator

The items have all started to shed the black substance.? The container is left in the sun with the lid on daily so the water stays warm.? I am not certain if this is a recipe (Copied from a forum member) or if one of the ingredients or all are responsible, I do not have time to check but it is working really well if other people need to clean items why not try it.
There is also a bottle I found nearby if anyone has a clue how to date it, please let me know.99*

I am back from being devastated by Wilma and I have not read all of your posts, so I hope this is on target.

What you are using is a very basic reverse electrolysis that will not be enough to protect most artifacts, especially iron.

First tip:? Soak everything you find in Salt Away (West Marine has it, buy it in the gallon jug) as soon as you get back!
You can remove the encrustation to satisfy your curiosity but put it right back into Salt Away solution.? 1 cup to 5 gallons is about right.? You can leave it there forever, but the solution needs to be changed every month or so.

Second tip:? Set up a real reverse electrolysis system.? They are pretty easy and cheap, let me know if you need any help.

Great finds!? I will keep looking at your posts.? How old is your ship?
