I think it goes to a overhead fire sprinkler
I think that's a good idea, but I can't see how it works. Can you explain - please ;D?

Was it found anywhere near a church?

It looks like those things that they put over the incense burners at church.

As an ex altar boy myself , Mrs Oroblanco, same thought struck me for a moment - but I don't think so :)

Wesfrye,
Yes, the stainless bar slides all the way out.

AA,
Hey, this was found among possible WW2 building tear-downs also.

Looks more like the thing they used to use to put out candles.

Best,

To me it looks like one of those little bells that merchants hang over their door to let them know when someone comes in. If so, looks like the clapper is missing. Monty

Monty, my first thought was - wow, he's right, but - Dang, it's the smallest one I've ever seen - comparing it to the quarter, anyway.

No bell clapper on this item. I'm kinda thinking the fire-sprinkler ideas may be the answer. Thanks for all the help.

I can assure your there is only one like my better half, ok I cannot assure you of anything but all kidding aside for the most part my wife isn't too bad about anything except the detecting. And money, and the kids, and . . . well you get the point. To quote someone famous: "Marriage is a wonderful institution etc etc" and I should have been institutionalized a longgggggggg time ago. ;) ;) ;D
