I found this in a field close to an old home site along with a few flat buttons. I actually found it a while back but it just dawned on me-could it be a Confederate cartridge box finial?

I have always been told that the lead ones are confederate. I have found a few and they were always on a confederate site. They have a little more "character" than the old brass ones. Regards

Yes, it does appear to be a cartridge-box finial... but the finder (CKaufman) did not tell us what the metal is. If it is brass, it could be from either yankee or Confederate OR from an Indian-Wars (1870s-1890s) cartridge-box.

Most Confederate finials were brass, but they did manufacture a few from pewter and a few from "hardened-lead" -- which is a solder-like alloy.

So, CKaufman, is your cartridge-box finial made of brass, or of pewter/hardened-lead?

Thank you for taking the time to reply with the answer. Congratulations on finding your first cartridge-box lead finial, which most likely was Confederate-made. I'd hunt that area very closely, because the odds favor there being some more Confederate relics around there. :)
