I am looking for information on two pcs I purchased at auction. They are both about 5 inches long. One has two swival type parts and is stamped S.S.VIRGINIA which was originaly The Merrimac. the other pc has 4 numberd eye hook that are lead filled on the back. Any information what they are history value ect... would be appreciated. Thanks cw1861

The pieces in you pics look more modern. The S.S. Virginia was not the Merrimac. I'm thinking that it came after the CW. It could have been a passenger ship? Still a good find!! Tony

I agree they look modern. Especially the numbers stamped on the plate that holds the rings.

OK the piece with the eyelets was wielded! I don't believe they had wielders during the CW!
I dont know but they soldered the backs of cw buttons and he said it was lead filled on the back. However the numbers font appears to me to be modern.

Cw1861, the other piece has a better possibility to be an older font but it doesnt look very corroded for being that old around saltwater. I have no idea what it is. Did they tell you what it was in the eBay listing? There are several SS Virginias and I see nothing that jumps out as CW. If we could see the EBay listing might help. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=370101285815

I agree they look like sailing vessel parts. All the ships i have read about named Virginia were rigged for sailing except the Merrimac witch was officially named Virginia but not often called by that name. Of the others one was wrecked an sable island in 1879, another was scrapped in Yokohama in 1933 and another renamed Garibaldi was sunk but refloated and scrapped in 1946 in Genoa. The last I think would be I think the most likely that these parts came from.
