Confederate Sword Handle !!

The Relic Gods seem to be smiling on me and my treasure hunting buddies lately. A few months ago we were digging a privy that dated back to 1850's - early 1870's. Turned out to be a very good hole with lots of pontiled bottles and a few $$$ bottles. Along with the bottles, I dug a sword handle that was so corroded you could barely tell what it was. Condition was so bad that it was nearly last pick when we divided the take.
I wound up with the handle so I took it home a dumped it into a olive oil bath and forgot about it. A couple of days ago I checked it and it still looked horrible so I put it in the electrolysis tub overnight. The next morning I nearly had a heart attack when I pulled it out and wiped off the crud and saw the CS letters. Brass CS Short Sword Handle !!

It reminds me of when I dig a corroded flat button and see just enough to know it's military. It's great fun to watch it clean! But I'll take a shock like you got just the same as a slow surprise.

PS.. My best find from last year stayed a secret until I got home and cleaned a little crud off.
