Confederate scabbard top - sword or bowie knife??? Deep River, NC

During a search and recovery dive in the Deep River near Sanford, NC, I located this piece using a White's VLF Surfmaster II underwater detector. It appears to have had leather inside, and is now dried out. Tell me what you think! Thanks for looking, happy hunting!

I'd say sword, but the rest of the scabbard would help be sure. Or of course whatever blade went with it. So go git it!

Hey, ya gotta dream! Had a real thought though, what is the interior width of the mouthpiece, inside the leather insert? That will give us some idea of a rough width of the blade it was used for. Might not be precise, but we would probably be able to rule out some possibilities.
