I dug this general service eagle button 2 nights ago near downtown, Savannah, GA. When looked at the back, it was blank and the shank was flimsy. I was confused because the front looked like the civil war period design, but the back looked weird. Anyway, later that evening I showed it to a fellow (and very well accomplished) detectorist who told me that it looked weird because it was Confederate made. Does anyone know or have any reference to the Confederates making eagle buttons like this?

So far as I know, the only Confederate ones made were one piece cast lead.

I have dug a few plain back General Service buttons, too. I think I have dug some tin backs as well.

Creskol is correct... insofar as is currently known, the Confederates did not manufacture any brass buttons which match up with your find. It has a blank back even though it is yankee-made because by the middle of the civil war the urgent need for multi-millions of yankee army enlisted-men's buttons caused "quality standards" to be lessened enough that no maker or dealer-ID backmark was required.

Thanks guys. I suspected there would be no evidence of this. Thanks for confirming.

Yes it’s Union, I’ve found several plain back eagle buttons.

I don't think the Confederates would have been keen on making Federalist Eagle/Great Seal button pattern.
