I just dug this little guy up about an hour ago. Could this be an Infantry button? The shank is still intact. There could be writing on the back, however I have not cleaned it yet. Thanks for your help!

Yes, your button appears to be a kepi-size (13mm) British-made Confederate Infantry "Old-English I" button (which relic-diggers commonly call a "Script I" button). I'm sure it is a British-made one because it has the distinctive perfectly-round loop seen on the British-made Confederate Military buttons. Your button is thought to have been manufactured by the firm of Smith, Kemp, & Wright of Birmingham England. Go the webpage linked below and scroll all the way down to the final photo, which shows the kepi-size version.

I should mention, cuff-size (15mm-16mm) ones are also known to exist. Please measure yours and let us know its diameter.
