I wish I had better news, but this is a souvenir or novelty coin. Genuine Confederate half dollars, of which there are very few, bear an 1861 Seated Liberty obverse, and the Confederate States of America reverse shown below.

Here's a link to photos of a Scott restrike from the same dies:

Still a neato find!

You may have a Son's of Confederate Veterans souvenir coin.

According to Colin R. Bruce III's Unusual World Coins, a "Confederate Centennial Half Dollar" coin was issued in 1961 by the Coin-of-the-Month Club in Sioux Falls, SD. These were struck in a variety of metals: bronze, copper-nickel-zinc alloy, "golden bronze," gilt bronze, oxidized coper-nickel-zinc alloy, and .925 (sterling) silver. The coin had the same obverse as the one posted by KAJ, and the same Confederate States of America reverse that I posted.

I believe that the Georgia Mint, a private firm which produces souvenir replica & fantasy Confederate coins in a variety of denominations, may have issued a similar half dollar as well.

Cool find sorry to hear the bad news though :-[
