Research the "Appomattox Campaign" in which General Lee finally ended up surrounding... basically half the Confederate soldiers were marching @ the end of the war in this campaign in Union supplies they looted. Before the end of the war, ALL the confederate supply routes were burned to the ground leaving the Rebels with no food, no supplies, nothing at all.. Lot of confederates had to march with no boots, half of the confederates ended up sneaking away, many came down with disease, and many desertion of the rebels. It was the worse military times for the CSA ever in history and probably the harshest military campaign in history. It was so bad, many rebels deserted, many rebels were marching in bare feet and could barely walk, no food,etc... During Battle of Sayler's Creek 8,000 rebels, the heart of two corps, was cut off and forced to surrender by Sheridan, Maj. Gen. Andrew Humphreys.. Over 8,000 rebels died during this campaign and over 20,000 surrounded.. simply because of no supplies, no food, no sleep, etc etc.. The only thing the confederates could do during this campaign was run away (desertion which many many of them did) or try and march on with basically nothing but what they looted from union soldiers..
However... Union casualties for the Appomattox campaign were about 9,700 killed, wounded, and missing or captured. So even with the little the rebels had they sure still gave the yanks a hell of a fight til Lee finally gave up. They would not have been able to carry on, the way they did, if it was not for looting union supplies. Every dead union soldier was 1 gun and more ammo they could use to kill more yanks... At the end.. the only supplies they were able to get were from dead union soldiers pretty much.
