Cone:Square at the TOP & Round at the BOTTOM

Hey Y'all, I think junk mystery pieces follow me home! :laughing7: I know this is probably a nothing, but I still would like to know what it is. It's cone shaped and has a square hole at the top and a round one at the bottom. It appears to have been broken on one side. I can't see any threads inside. Thanks in advance for the help. ;D Breezie

Re: Cone:Square at the TOP & Round at the BOTTOM

Designed to be secured with a carriage bolt. Tapered to be "pulled into place," maybe as a as a shim, spreader, or spacer of some sort. Gosh knows what it might have gone to?? :dontknow:

Thanks Creskol for your explaination, but I'm not sure I understand what you mean by being 'pulled into place.' It looks like if this piece was pulled into place, it would break, which could have happened. One end is broken-off, and it appears to have had a side to it like the drawing, but I really don't know. I know it's a nothing find, but I like to know what things are . . .which is probably my worst fault in MD-ing. Sometimes I just have to put mystery finds in the 'shoebox' and forget about them . . .if you know what I mean.

Not too far from where this was dug, I found a carriage type bolt. I didn't bring it home, but left it beside a tree, so when I go back, I'll get it to see if it is the right size. After reading your reply, I found this site, which I thought was pretty interesting:

Re: Cone:Square at the TOP & Round at the BOTTOM

a square headed (carraige type bolt) threads thru the hole in it and snugs down into the square hole area * as the nut on the far side of the threaded rod part of the bolt is tightened down -- the lead washer type item or soft metal type item the bolt is threaded thru "forms into" shape as the pressure squeezes it into form. -- if too much pressure is used ( if one over tightens it) --it can of course crack

It's part of an old "crank handle" or lever. I have corn shellers and gringers that have that style of mounting but they are larger. The handles fit on the end of a shaft with a squared end and threaded stud and nut. I can get a pic if you need one. Tony

Thanks Tony!. If it's not too much trouble, I would like to see a pic. I'll put a green check on this one. Breezie
