Any Ideas? I'm curious about the cone shaped object with the wierd markings. I found it on a site where I found a colonial era axe head. More modern junk as well though. Also wonder about the lead shot. I wonder if it might be my first worthwile lead find. The cone shaped thing has the remains of a wooden dowl in it and what apears to be a hole to fasten join it. It has a wierd scrolling on it. ???

Thanks pronghorn I think its copper. Thats what it registered. Its kind of lightweight and thin to go on a flag pole. I'm wondering if its some kind of tamp. Probably something out of a cracker Jack box with my luck. I went back and looked up some pics of shot and now I'm wondering if I might have found my first musket ball and didn't even know it. It's too big for buckshot. About the size and shape of a big blueberry. I don't know

Spray some wd 40 or oil of some kind on it,and scrub it with a tooth brush ,and dry it good and then show us the pictures. It will help get all the dirt out of the details . The bullet hit something thats why its smashed like that. Its a old one

I DISAGREE about scrubbing this one with a toothbrush. The dirt is part of the reason the detail is visible--it gives the detail Contrast so that it can be seen!

I always toothpick brass--never wetting it. Especially if there is detail to be seen. At most, I dry brush with a toothbrush on eagle buttons--but only in cases where the detail is 3-D enough to be easily seen. See my post on Buttons in the cleaning and preservation threads for more information.

How are the figures / writing oriented? Tip up or tip down? If tip up; it's the tip for a "guide-on" of some sort. If it's tip down, it's the tip of a walking cane. My first thought was it's one of those "pointers" used by Jewish Rabbis to follow the written lines in a Torah. I don't know what the true name is for that pointer. Anyway, it appears a little too large in diameter. I'm not Jewish, so I have no knowledge of the technical names for their religious paraphernalia. ( and this is not meant as a snide remark)

My first thought on the cone thingy was whisk broom handle.

Just a gut reaction, though. I have nothing to back it up...

Its very small. Could it be part of something to write with?

I was thinking about end of an old parasol (umbrella). It would have been decorative covering a wooden rod.

I think this piece is the bottom of a cane.

And I also think it is mid-1800s at the Latest.

I know nothing compared to most of yall about the colonial stuff, I'm a civil war man myself. That being said it reminds me of the tip of a civil war bayonet scabbard jast fancier. All the scabbard tips I've seen are plain looking but that might be a direction you wanna look/think. Maybe it went with a colonial bayonet... like I said though I have alot to learn about colonial items.

I thought that for a second, but the wooden piece that is still in it made me think otherwise. I also don't see the usual two nail holes at the top where it would've attached to the leather if it was a scabbard...

Re: Cone shaped object and shot

Thanks for all the responses. I'm hoping that ID'ng this thing will clue me in about the site. The did find a colonial era axe head there and confirmed that. The cone has the remains of a wooden piece in it. There is one hole near the top that looks like a place for a fastener. It seems a little light weight to have been a cane tip, but the tip is solid metal for about the last quarter inch. It's not worn the way I would expect if it would have been used as a cane. (Can't say for sure) I beleive it is copper. I'll keep looking, If I find any clues I'll post them.

Thanks Again

RFF I was excited about that scabbard idea but then I remembered the wood too. I'm leaning towards a parasol tip. But ?????? I would like to know what era its from.

Anyway,
That lead, Do you think that could that be from a muzzle loader of some sort? I actually found it in a different loc. The weekend before.

Re: Cone shaped object and shot

Well, I was bored at my desk, started tapping the thing on my notepad, watching grit fallout and the wooden stob fell completely out. I guess it dried sufficiently and shrunk. I'll post a pic. The end of the wooden peg was abviously carved with a knife by hand. Pretty fine tipped as well. Makes me a little more certain that is wasn't a weight bearing thing. Still don't know, could be wrong about that too.
