Cone shape filled with something orange-yish - I'll call it SOLVED

This is about 1 3/4" long. Weighs 29g. I considered possibly it being the foot to a chair leg but I don't know... something does seem quite right about that.

Not certain of the metal.. brass? It is not magnetic. My detector is putting it in the pull-tab range.

Any help appreciated ;D

Do you think the orange-ish stuff is rust?

The orangish stuff is most likely aged resin based glue or adhesive.

Hopefully not toxic because I just used a letter opener to pry some of it out for a better look :-\-

It has a consistancy sort of like a clay soil that has dried. When I found the item it was full of typical soil from the site up to the edge. I cleaned that out and found this stuff. The orange stuff is packed in pretty well.

Cane Tip?

Sounds like a possibility ???

Not rust - could be resin or glue as Scott said... I don't know anything about that though. Does this look like old glue? :laughing7:

Re: Cone shape filled with something orange-yish

I agree with AU24K and think it is some type of epoxy or either wood filler. I find this orange stuff quite often in vintage and antique furniture. Generally it is not in a glob like yours, but more or less smeared where the leg would join underneath a table. More than likely, the screws had worked loose, so someone used wood filler/epoxy to help tighten the joint.

In your case, I think yours was glued or wood filled to hold it on as a 'tip' or as a 'finial.' Whatever it attached to was probably wood. I like diggummup's idea of it being a cane tip. Breezie

peg leg tip

Interesting thought... and I did find it near where I found a Spanish American War Vet badge.

I'm going to give this thread the big green smooch. :D

Thanks everyone!
