Could have been a poured base for a 4x4 post. I have a sign shop and we have poured something like that in soft ground when we know the posts are going to come back out, but need to keep them from sinking into the ground while they are there. Just a guess. It looks like there may have been some kind of hardware in the bottom of the posts that slid into the holes.

Someone have a treehouse in that tree maybe?

Was there any cinder block or old brick in the area ? If so, I'd say that they were concrete or mortar mix from the holes in the block. After the block was broken these were left.

that's a very good guess and sounds right thinking about it

Yes, a few pices of cinder and clay block. And 12 buckets of broken pieces of sandstone..The sandstone is now part of a French Well (?) that I dug for a downspout. Thanks guys..
