Any ideas? It was found at an old cabin site that dates to around the 1860's (based on a tree ring count of a tree growing in the middle of the cabin).

I was thinking saddle concho, but the back does not have any evidence of anything having been soldered or attached to it.

It's possible that it is the brass face of an old button that had an iron backing which rusted away? Although it's a bit large for that....

I should also mention that I have found military buttons/buckles in this area, not sure if this could have anything to do with military.
It was found on the west coast.

If it's not a saddle or bridle concho, it's sure missing a good opportunity. I have no idea, except to say it looks like it ought to be from Texas.

Found it by accident. It's part of a snap. Go to the link then scroll down the page to the 33rd item.

Eyelets, Setters, Screws & Rivets

It's in the Jantz Knife making supply catalog if you would rather search than click on a link. Look under rivets and snaps.

It's highly possible that it is a snap cover, although it would be a fairly large snap.

Now that I'm thinking about it, the star design would strengthen the convex shape so it wouldn't deform when pressed.

Ya, I think I'll say case closed. Thanks.

Case closed on a snap larger than a quarter ??

That's gotta be a one of a kind sorta thing wouldn't you say? It's something I've yet to see

I've dug the same item here in Southwest Georgia at an 1860's home site as well. Yours is in much better shape than mine. I'll try and post a picture of it. I never have figured what it was off of. Good luck.

Maybe a snap on a saddle bag?

Any better ideas and I'll consider them.
