I was doing a little detecting on my property which was a former plantation. The item below (which is very light in weight) was found 8” down in sandy soil. At first I thought in may be the metal piece that fits over the cork on a bottle of champagne but now I am not so sure. It doesn’t appear to be heavy duty enough to be a part of a button but again I am a novice in these matters.

Very much looking forward to an ID by the pro’s and I thank you in advance.

First off... if you're using the XP Deus then you're no novice to detecting my friend! :laughing7:
I'm thinking it's saddle hardware/decoration, looks to have been torn off something.

Date wise, I'm thinking mid-19thc. :icon_scratch:

Nice find,
Dave

Thank you ANTIQUARIAN for giving your educated input.

Late last night I was still wondering what the item was and my thoughts paralleled yours. My wife has a few fancy bridles for her horse and I was thinking the broken ‘cap’ may have been ripped off after a riding incident.

I truly wish these items could talk!

After talking to a few horse people, they think it may have been from a hat instead of a bridle. They indicated that any bridle or saddle hardware would have to be quite sturdy unlike the item I found.

Any thoughts on this theory?

Thank you.

In all honesty, those of us who regularly detect old homesteads/farms have all found relics like this and have no idea where they came from. :dontknow:
Your mystery piece could be decoration from a piece of furniture, a document box or as you mentioned a ladies hat.

Thanks very much for getting back with a response Sir,
Dave

Thank you so much Lunch Bag. :occasion14:

It's the end of January, the ground is frozen solid and we just received another 10" of snow last night.
Sounds like I'm suffering from a case of cabin fever! :tongue3:

Take care my friend,
Dave

It's hard to say for sure because the edges are so degraded but it could be a bed bolt cover.

I agree. I would say it was a decorative piece that was attached to leather. Maybe hat, saddle, saddle bags, etc. Nice find.

Thank you for the additional suggestions!

And here’s a picture from my property which may warm those stuck in the colder climates.
