I'm getting ready to buy a Garrett detector. I've been looking at the Ace 250, of course, but I'm still not sure that's the way I want to go.

I would like to know, from someone with experience, which detector will go deeper (in discrimination mode)---the Ace 250, the 550, or the 750. It would be great if I could get an answer from someone who has had the chance to actually compare the 250 to the others. Thanks for any help!

I would suugest you get the ACE 250 with the large coil, as depth is of a concern to you. The larger the coil, the greater the depth as a general rule. The ACE 250 is a fine detector and you can decide at a later date which type of hunting you want to do and what kind of machine you really need. Most hunters who progress in the hobby own more then one machine, as different detectors work better in certain environments. The ACE does just as good as lots of detectors costing 2 x as much.

Most of Garrett's detectors get the same depth in discriminate mode as in none discriminate mode. The circuitry is designed in such a way as it only removes the audio as you increase the discrimination, unlike a lot of other brands which lose more depth as you increase the discrimination. The exception with Garretts is the GTI 2500, Grand Master Hunter CX and Scorpion which have a true all metal mode, and gets greater depth in comparison the discriminate mode.

The depth between the machines you you have mentioned is very insignificant. Hope this helps.

i have used the GTAx750 for 7 yrs and I have found so many good target's it's amazing. I also used the 250 it's a great machine but the 750 is better, plus you can get a good used 750 for about $290.00 at places like Clevengers detectors. The 750 has great disc and sen. This machine loves dimes and quaters and silver. I bought mine on ebay a while back for $250 and it has paid for itself too many times to count. You can purchase the double D 10 x 14 coil which will give some good depth. I like the crossfire 8" coil compared to the elliptical coils. Either machines are great for coin shooting. Cliff
