I have been very happy with my Tejón -- it really fits my preferences. I like the fast recovery, excellent discrimination, and depth. I don't like looking at the screens on my ATP or M6, so I'm really happy with audio only most of the time. I don't mind the ground balancing on the Tejón -- I like that I can tinker and tune to try to find the best settings. I'm planning on adding the 5.75 inch concentric soon.

I'd like to have another Tesoro detector, that will act as a backup, and also a loaner to friends that want to try out the audio only style. If possible, I'd like a model that offers something a little different than the Tejón, that might give me better results in certain terrains. So far I've only used the Tejón in pebbly soil (I'm in the northeast), but I hope to do some detecting on beaches soon.

I was thinking of sticking with delta coil machines, to have more interchangeability. Is that wise? I was considering the Vaquero, since I do like the control of ground balancing. Possibly the Black Vaquero, since that would get me another coil as well... Or is the Vaquero too much like the Tejón? Would the Lobo help at all on saltwater beaches? Would the simplicity of the Cibola be worth the limitations of no ground balancing? Should I also be looking at the epsilon models?

Any suggestions? Thanks!

If it's for you, get the Vaquero. Only a 9v battery, a lot lighter. You may end up leaving the Tejon at home......

If for friends and the grandkids, a Compadre is best (8" coil). My coworkers couldn't get the ground balance, threshold stuff on the Cibola and Vaquero.

I wouldn't waste money on the epsilons unless you have money to burn......jmho

The compadre is great!! Definitely easy to use, but if you run into tough ground it won't work very well.
Well my vote is the mojave.
Nice and simple to use with ground switch. Minimalist setup compare to your beast tejon.
Very simple for others to use. And a steal at the price it costs. It doesn't use that same coils as the tejon but the 7" precision coil it comes with is perfect for it.
Great for tot lots and schools. It's essentially a compadre with a sensitivity knob, ability to change coils and ground switch if the ground gets harsh
If the ground is harsh where you are you just flick the ground switch to "high" and it runs great.

I second the Compadre. If you want to switch out coils then go with the Mojave. Its just like the compadre but a little deeper with better flexibility in hot soil.

The Vaquero is great, but similar enough to the Tejon that I don't really see the point. The Compadre has that great disc and has those magic powers, it is well proven. That is really all you need IMO.

Seems to me the thing to do is have one from the HOT line for a really deep, high-strung machine, and one from the Umax line for the calm smooth operation and razor sharp disc. And a Compadre. Those three would make a great arsenal.

Get the Mojave, works well in a lot of soil conditions, performance in trash is top notch and easy and fun to use.

I had the Tejon but sold it when i got the Vaquero. I like the Vaquero more for coin shooting in parcs

I'd consider the Cibola as it uses the same coils and offers quick turn on and go. If you need the ground balance control, you have it on the T.

I am thinking about the Tejon for myself. I just bought a new Mojave for a companion for my Tek Patriot and finding I am using it more for my hunting needs. I have had the Vaquero and Outlaw, both are good detectors. I like the Mojave better for it's simplicity and the 7 inch coil that is stock. One thing about a Tesoro, they are all a little different, and you don't have to have screens, meters and training wheels to find treasure. HH Cal

Getting the 5.75 concentric is good, fabulous coil. I'd say grab a Cibola with a 8x11. Going down in coil size with a preset GB is better than going up in size from what I understand. Although the 8x11 is the coil I like the least, by far, out of the three. Being able to interchange the three coils between the two machines is a plus. But for mixing it up a bit, an Outlaw would be my first choice though. Ground balancing is such an easy thing to do and only takes a few seconds. Personally, I would rather have GB and not need it, than not having it and wishing I did...

Saltwater Beach Hunting - Wet sand is a problem for ALL single-frequency detectors, including Tesoro. The Cibola, seemed to be the best out of the Mojave; Silver uMax; Vaquero; Outlaw; and Lobo Super Traq (which is the worst!). If you can afford the Vaquero as your second Tesoro - buy it. The Vaquero is the best "multi-use" machine Tesoro makes - period. :skullflag:

If I come across a good deal on a Tejon I will be adding one as a companion to my Vaquero as well, and I don't care what she says.

Thanks everybody for the useful advice. I'm really curious about the Mojave, and I definitely want to try a Compadre someday. For this time around, I guess I've narrowed it down to the Cibola or the Vaquero -- it would be really useful to stay within the delta coil family. The Vaquero would make it a better backup machine for me -- though it is very similar, a lot of people seem to prefer it to the Tejón, even if it gives up an inch in depth here and there. The Cibola would be better for short sessions when I don't want to spend time tinkering, for a loaner, or as Terry advised, for the saltwater beaches. Still a tough decision, but I'm getting closer. Thanks for your help!

Cheers!

if the new machine is going to be a loaner at times then go with the Cibola or Mohave. They sell Cibolas around here like hotcakes as fast as they can go. They are very popular. My wife uses one and out digs me most of the time. I don't know about the Mohave but I have a Silver Umax and its performance is shocking. Its great ! The Tejon is like having a four speed manual shift and the Vaquereo is a very smooth easy to drive automatic transmission compared to a Vaq . I am the proud owner of many many Tesoro detectors and love all of them.
