I was in a coin shop today when a lady said she found some coins while remodeling here house.

She then showed the guy 2 walking liberties. He looked them over and said they were in pretty bad shape. (humm...looked nice to me, but Im sure they werent super)

He then went to a magazine style book and looked up the dates of the walkers. He gave her $10.33 for each. She said that was fine and the transaction took place.

Is $10.33 really a good price? They were in fair condition, maybe good condition I would say at best.

Just wondering.

He was probably checking the coin dealer pricelist. I think it's called the "gray sheet". Actually, his price sounds pretty fair assuming they were common dates in low circulated condition. Remember, the coins shop has to pay the rent etc. My coin shop sells walkers for $12 each right now. Seems like a pretty small spread, and if precious metals drop the coin dealer is taking a risk. Of course, if metals go up they may get a windfall.

Short answer: sounds pretty fair

That would have been a dollar below spot, giver or take.

Assuming they were common dates in typical condition, I too think a fair price was paid.

Cool. Just wanted to make sure they were being reasonable.

Makes me feel a little better knowing that they are doing people right.

I agree with what Numismatic has to say.

If they were common dates, she got a fair price though my local shop would have paid a bit more for them, closer to $11.50 if I recall correctly.

Thanks for that link. I didn't realize the later ones had any premium. I found 7 in my dream box earlier this month and all were later mintages. I saw the high value for the 1938 D on your link and remembered one of mine was a 1938. Grabbed the box with them and it turns out mine was a 1938 D as well. That makes that box even better! :)
