Well, I finally bit the bullet and paid my $20 to official join TNET. I did so because there are so many good folks that have been so nice to give advice freely, (Diver_Down, AU24K, and dasherhunting) just to name a few. I really do appreciate that there are gents and ladies out there that help beginners. Thought I would pay my dues like everyone else.

And like every one else, I am having my share of skunk boxes. Last 2 produced nada. Depressing, but I will keep on going.

On ebay, I noticed what is referred to as "rainbow" colored coins. I have a couple of cents and a nickle that resemble the same. These coins, however, are not mint, proofs, but just plain old clad. Anyone keep these?

Sounds like you mean "toning". This is a natural occurance. You might see it on an ender, that's been in a roll for a long time. I see someone selling beautifully toned Walkers on ePay, they fetch a pretty good premium. I believe it's possible to reproduce this toning effect, fairly easy. ffd

Congrats on becoming a Charter Member! :hello2: :headbang:
Keep on lookin'.
When I get burnt out on one thing, say cents, I'll switch it up and get $200-$300 in ones and look for stars, etc.
Always trying to keep it fresh!

Best Wishes,
Scott

apush, Keep the faith, We must persevere in the midst of the slim pickins- this happens to
all of us ( 1 40% half, out of the last five boxes searched-for me ) . The beauty of these
lean times is that when you least expect it, a nice silver piece will appear - and wow ! will it
look nice after not seeing any for a while . I hope this doesn't seem too cheerful to be
believed - because I have found this to be the truth of my CRH-ing experiences . Argentium.

Apush,
When I started doing Half Dollar boxes, I ordered 4 boxes from six different banks. The banks that produced skunk boxes I eliminated and then I ordered 4 more from the remaining banks. One bank's boxes always had keepers, not many, but no skunk boxes. I started ordering 8 boxes a week from them, and most boxes produced.
At one point I started getting 14 boxes a week, but found with the extra boxes a few more keepers, but more skunk boxes. The difference from 8 to 14 boxes wasn't really worth the extra coins to dump, so I went back down to 8 boxes a week.
I never had much luck doing 1 or 2 boxes, volume is the way to go.

Rainbow Coins command premiums over plain white coins however usually it refers to ones in uncirculated or MS condition. Circulated examples don't have a premium but still it depends on the look or rarity of the coin. The ones that sell are silver and are in PCGS or NGC slabs. Even then, the companies are picky about what to grade or put into a slab. An example would be a MS66 plain white American Silver Eagle that sells for $25 bucks but you get an attractive rainbow one in the same condition, it would sell for $100 to $200 range. You can go to teletrade for the rainbow coin section to see the prices realized for them to get an idea. That being said many people try to create or doctor rainbow coins. Expert collectors know the difference between artificially toned and natural toned. No expert collector would buy an articial one. Some new naive collectors will buy articial ones off ebay but ultimately get ripped off in a way since no dealer would buy them for premium prices. I wouldn't buy any uncertified rainbow coins off Ebay unless you're an expert in telling the difference. If you go to the PCGS u.s. coin forum, many people frequently will talk about rainbow toned coins or show pics of what they got.

I had a person tell me that coins kept in the cloth bank bags would get that Rainbow Tone Effect. I am not sure though, it sort of makes sense.

Some claim that Morgans stored over decades led to rainbow textile toning. Not sure how legit it is. Those cloth bags caused some chemical reaction with the coins. Toning is just like rust but for silver. It's just corrosion that may have nice colors. For high end rainbow toned coins, experts collect them like art pieces because people get tired of blast white coins. That's why many PCGS, NGC slabbed attractive ones sell for moon money on Ebay.

Sometimes at a coin show i will buy dirty/rainbow/toned silver that no one wants when its at a low premium because some places just give prices to buy according to the silver content not how the coin or round looks.
