Columbus medal?

I found this in a basement hole of a Victorian home-site.
It's about the size of a nickel and a one-sided pressing. The 4 holes probably mounted it to something.
I know there was a big 400 year commemoration of Columbus in 1896 (in Chicago?)and an official coin or
medallion. Has anybody seen anything like this one, or can anyone tell me anything about it? Thanks
for looking.

I've seen something very similar(especially the mounting holes)on a cigar box from early 1900s.They were very expensive cigars as I recall

Yes it does look a lot like the front of the Columbian Exposition coin. Maybe it's from a souvenier from the exposition?
Correction: in my previous post replies I meant 1892 ( not 1896) Duh!
