ok, I took Don in NJ's advice and tumbled my colonial coins
(tumbling colonial coins sounds TERRIBLE doesn't it ?)

I tried EVERYTHING else first and could not get any detail on my latest colonial find so I figured I had nothign to loose and went for it - boy I am glad I did !

the coins are the exact same size and weight (I'm guessing there) VERY thin, but they are two different coins for sure

see pics below

also no detail came out on the backs at all, i think they may have been stuck to the sides of the canister - not sure though

thanks again Don in NJ for the suggestion and thanks all for your help !

The one on the bottom left looks like Liberty Cap...dated 1796 to 1806...the one on the right could be a Liberty Head..Just a guess from your outline. Nice Finds

Yo, Kevin, it looks like a King George II. Man, that tumbling brought some decent detail out. Overall, great recovery, dude.

The coin on the left appears more to look like a Draped Bust Large Cent?and not a Liberty Cap, and Draped Bust are known for wearing down to almost nothing, more than Liberty Caps coppers.

The one on the right does appear to be a King George II copper.

If my friend Wayne had not done the tumbling and had results, I would have never, ever suggested doing so. I am glad some details showed and now you have some idea of what they might possibly be.

hey don,

don't get me wrong - i really APPRECIATE the idea, i wouldn't have done it otherwise and hey it worked !
it's just the idea of tumbling a 200 year old coin (or any old coin for that matter) makes me cringe !

thanks again

Well, your tumbling worked better than my chemical cleaning. Man these coppers are tough.

Ouch!! :o :'( That hurts. Finding unidentifiable large coppers is really bittersweet.

Kevin,

Just chalk them up as 1793 chain cents and be done with it. ;D Seriously, the above ID attempts seem reasonable. I looked at them for a while and couldn't come up with anything else. I suppose it's possible the one on the right is a Connecticut copper but there isnt enough detail to really make an accurate guess. I've got three (2 1/2 really) that look much worse. No detail at all. For my own benefit, I'm just calling them King Georges. ::)

yeah guys,

i figure, hey i broke into the 1700's (finally) so i'm happy - i think don & zoy's guess at draped bust large cent & KG II are good enough

like i said i'm just happy to be in the 1700's - now for the 1700's SILVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know that will look better !

(and bioprofessor - i have to be honest, those look even worse than mine - thanks for the pics)

thanks all

On the one on the left I think I can see the word "LIBERTY" up on the upper right hand quadrant. Would that be something on one of those coins? Monty
