Ok, I am not above begging so here goes. Anybody near Western NC have a colonial site they are going to dig, and would not mind having me tag along. I have none where I live, and would love to have a shot at one. I will have the entire week after Christmas off, and would love to cap off the new year that way. Thanks in advance.

do some research - there's tons of info out there - you usually cant hunt historical spots but you can try and get permissions out side of them

Usually when someone tags along with me they seem like they are going to cry. It might be all the sticker bushes, ticks, poison ivory, sweltering heat, rain, snow, ice, bugs, swamps, and miles of hiking. Then it's just a matter sifting. Just down about four feet deep in rocks, bricks, roots and sand stone. Oh yes, did I mention detecting? Just turn it on and listen for non-ferrous metal. Just kidding. Western N.C. has some cool sites. Last time I detected down there I ran into many water snakes. Besides Civil war sites you have GOLD in the there hills....Casper gave you a good lead.

Will check that out. I have been in touch with some people about 2 hrs down the road from me that are going to get me a list of where farms were. Not much by way of civil war in my neck of the woods. There was some troop movement, but no battles.
