Yesterday was my first Civil War hunt, Steve found a wheat, and I found modern brass & slugs. Very interesting location, virgin, and we'll go back.

Today was my first Colonial hunt.

Using my CTX, this was a difficult signal - but it was just enough of a sound that I dug it. Small and the same color as the dirt, took the pin pointer to corner it, so not sure of the depth. Steve came over, and we needed to pass it by the experienced around here. Brushed it off with a toothbrush and hot water. Here's the pics....

Any ideas out there?

Much appreciated!

I think it's a crusty brooch of some kind :dontknow:

That's kinda what we thought. My guess would be it is made of brass.

This place had been pounded for years. Pretty difficult to search there as the stubble kept snagging the open coil. Next time I hit it I'll likely use my 1260X.

It look like a small leather ornament that was likely used on horse tack, and may date to the 1650-1700 period. It's in pretty bad shape but looks similar to many I've found on the earlier colonial sites. And it's an excellent sign that more oldies may be nearby. Go to www.jefpat.org, select "small finds", then "leather ornaments", and on the right click on "search all". You may find an example in there similar to yours.

Thanks guys! I used to work with horses, so that makes plenty good sense.

I'd say the mystery is solved.
