Colonial Shoe Buckle?

Got this buckle from the woods yesterday. I'm assuming it's a colonial shoe buckle and possibly from a child's shoe since it's a bit small, measuring 1 3/8" x 1 5/8".

Maybe... but, it most certainly resembles a Victorian or CW era "forked tongue" buckle...

I agree it's a shoe buckle...

Nice going Bookfisher, looks like a 1700's era shoe buckle to me. I like the markings on it, I have similar ones.
Added: with the small size indicated it could be knee breech buckle

Thanks Don for your opinion, always appreciated! By the way, the buckle was fairly close to the surface (if not on the surface) since I got an overload signal and at first thought it was another shotgun shell, but when I looked at the VDI and saw it reading in (if I recall correctly) the high 50s screwtop, I figured I better dig it. Glad I did.

wow fantastic buckle... I think it is about the best that I have seen so far in the way of shoe buckles etc. The detail is incredible, you can still see the pattern. A very big well done....
