Hello Everyone. I had the chance to hunt a Colonial Plantation today. It was real fun. Found mostly buttons. Hunted for a couple of hours. Dug a couple of buttons that I can't find any information on. The W Wallis Extra Rich button has alot of Gilt left on it. Anyone know or have any knowledge about the buttons let me know. I don't have a Button Book. I also found a spur and a heel plate. It was so hot today I am nursing myself for overheating right now. Hope yall enjoy the pictures.

Re: Colonial Plantation Hunt..Flat Button Day

great finds zaxfire. I particularly like the W. Wallis backmark. I've found hundreds of flat buttons, but I don't remember a 'Wallis". I found this little quote on an auction site which is selling a dragoon button with that makers backmark. They refer to it as a "scarce backmark" but it is unclear whether that means on that particular button, or in general. Judging from how few show up on plain flats, I'd guess the latter. William Wallis is listed as a button maker operating from 1800-1828. Your's is probably one of his later ones and it looks to be in great shape. "

"NEW Beautiful, early Navy button with scarce backmark of ".William.Wallis./Extra.Rich" Nicer than the plate example pictured in Albert's reference work!"

Re: Colonial Plantation Hunt..Flat Button Day

I have found a pair of W WALLIS cuff buttons off the same site. If yours is a coat button, and you want the cuffs to go with it let me know. They are nice, but not doing me any good.

Looks like you have a great place there to hunt. Good job cleaning those buttons, they look great! Now to find those coins you walked over :).

There were signals all over the place. Lots of low signals that I skipped over. In the iron range. I dug mostly 20 and above. I have permission to come back anytime I want to. There is also an old railroad that runs right through the property.

Wow that W Wallis Button is an old button. 1800-1828 time period. That freakin rocks. :headbang:  I am still looking for info on the Rich Orange Standard Gilt button. That one is a hard one to find info about to. I will Pm you Narthoniel

Re: Colonial Plantation Hunt..Flat Button Day

What a great hunt. Those buttons are beautiful. The spur and heel plate are too. I would go back and dig every signal. Some of those colonial greats can be very iffy sounding. Deep sounding is usually good.

Re: Colonial Plantation Hunt..Flat Button Day

The words on that button are whats called a quality mark. A way of saying, "our buttons are better, and this is why!" There is no telling who made it, when, or where. There are 2 good things about finding flat buttons:
Potential for some rare political/military varieties
Tells you the site is old

If you are finding flatties, there is excellent potential for coins. If Mr Wallis is layin around, there could be some capped bust coinage, and maybe older. Perhaps even some spanish silver or large cents. Keep huntin and dig as much as you dare, you NEVER know what you might find!

Re: Colonial Plantation Hunt..Flat Button Day

The crazy thing about most of these finds is that they were only about 5-6 inches deep. But I honestly had a cazillion signals today. Most would show in my Iron range so I would disreguard. Next time out I will dig more signals. For sure.

Re: Colonial Plantation Hunt..Flat Button Day

Is the w wallis button in any of the button books?

Re: Colonial Plantation Hunt..Flat Button Day

William Wallis was a British button maker c.1820s.

That spur sure is interesting where the boot straps would've gone through. I'd love to see a few more photos of it, if you don't mind. I've never seen a spur like that before, and I'd like to get a closer look.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

I love finding those flat buttons!

Yours are in great shape!

Re: Colonial Plantation Hunt..Flat Button Day

Alright Buckleboy. Let me take some pictures of the spur. Little bit better detail. I haven't seen a spur like this either. Kinda reminds me of a spanish piece or something. Lets find out and do some research.
