A bittersweet tale. It has been many months since finding anything older than 1836. Well I got away from the office for a few hours yesterday, finding NOTHING, and after nearly giving up I got a broken "shotgun shell" type of signal. While I was placing my detector down to dig the signal, I got a strong reading at zero inches from the underbrush next to where I laid my machine down. Reaching my probe under some thorny bushes I was able to pinpoint without digging!!!

Now the bittesweet part...200 plus years of acid rain hitting a coin on the earths surface makes for a totally unidentifyable coin. There is NO detail left on it. This is the second one I found in this type of condition. My best guess, being 27mm with a lot of corrosion is a counterfeit colonial of some type. I dont have a scale, so I am unable to weigh it.

I have a coin that is virtually identicle to that. It's about enough to make you sick. Oh well, into the unidentifiable coin jar with it and move on.

Tough one, Neil. But I'll tell ya, I've found innumerable coppers just like that over here in PA. What can you do? Can't bring em back. Hope the next one is better.

Wow that is a bummer! That looks like most of my coins. :-\

Neil, when you find them like that, first try a several photographs and then blow up on the computer and play with the settings, then when that fails :D try an aluminum foil rubbing with the shiny side against the coin, and best just to use your thumb.

As a last resort, since it is a wasted copper anyhow, a brass wire brush, sometimes that may bring out one detail which will be good enough to at least say what it might be or not be. Been there and done that, but luckily not too many times.

Reminds me of a very large 2006 penny from the beach here ;D
Really though, I am sorry man. Better luck next time.

Man I have a coin like that.. Had it for two years and almost threw it away and I thought, oh what the heck, so I put it in the rock tumbler for about 4 hours and low and behold I was able to ID it and get a date off of it..
