Funny--I'm not even sure where in the yard I dug this. Dug a few cents that looked like wheat cents to me without my glasses :) Upon washing them at home, I was pleasantly surprised to find that one was an IH cent. Then after a bath in hot peroxide I was even more surprised to see the date of 1869 on it! It looks like it was VF when dropped...our NJ soil takes a bit of a toll. Looks better in person than the scan reveals. This one has a full but slightly worn LIBERTY on the headband. I think it's my first semi-key date coin.

Here's a blurb from the Internet:
1869 Indian head penny value has steadily moved higher over the years. It is among the top 12 rarest and valuable Indian pennies.
Your coin, even in heavily worn condition enjoys great demand by collectors. So few have survived there is a potential collection waiting for all. It is one of those coins with a fairly substantial number minted, however the hobby has realized an unusually few are available today. A growing awareness of its rarity is pushing values higher.
Rising substantially in value are 1869 pennies in nice condition. If the headband and "Liberty" within the band are clearly visible there is huge potential for your coin. The image to the right is a coin never placed in circulation and showing no signs of wear on its surfaces. In outstanding condition the value of this 1869 penny is easily over $450.

That's beautiful! Great find! Nothing gives the rush like an old coin does.

Nice Indian, I like the toning, I think it's cool.

Great semi-key date find. Very sharp...

Nice and in great condition, congrats!!!

Congrats, you've found a good one! Be sure to check the coin closely. The 1869/9 overdate is even more valuable. Its hard to see from your photo, but yours doesn't appear to be the overdate. A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to find both types. The 1877 is definitely at the top of my bucket list.

love the indians, great find!

Wow great IH !

That's a nice looking 1869 IH. I dug an 1869 last year in similar condition to yours that I was pretty happy to find.
