I was assisting a local historical society do an amateur dig on a local fort. I had thought they has the actual location, but that is not the case. The site they are searching now holds promise, but I have not found enough relics, nails, horseshoes, to say this holds a high probability for the site.
I was wondering if the other sites, known to exist, if they had similarities that I could utilize in my search. I plan on taking the tejon to other locations to see what pops up. My questions are.....The most important question you answer when you walk onto a construction job site.....where is the latrine? Did they locate it inside, outside, other side from water source, fill it with trash later.....that is what I expect to locate initially. Second, militarily, were the forts located utilizing topography for fields of fire and protection. Or were they just at random crossroads, trading posts, places of convenience. The site they are searching has two hills that would be problematic if enemy were to occupy them. The enemy would have good view to the interior of the stockade. On that note, how high were the walls typically? That may answer the previous question. I would expect to find a large population of colonial nails, to show where the site was. I just joined onto this effort and would definitely like to nail down this location. Descriptions of locations from that time period are sketchy at the least. Roads move, due to travel methods and population shifts so I wonder where the best spot to start would be. There is a spring that is in good shape, and another question is how far from the water source would they have the fort. Thanks for listening and I will keep you posted on the effort
Jeff if you have any reference information I would greatly appreciate knowing where to look.
