not sure what it is ,most likely incomplete, the area dates to mid 1700's Acadian, with a later British site nearby, so it could be either perhaps

Yes Va, that's the important question to identify it. Looking from the back it seems like that might be a cap which is now corroded on. As you said, if the cap was removable it would be some type of container, maybe an inkwell.
