That's too obvious. Hoping for something rare and exciting. Didn't really consider that they had wingnuts in the 1700's.
That's what it looks like to me. Just because the site dates to the 1700's, all the finds dont have to.

It looks threaded from the picture, but I've never saw a wingnut shaped like that.

That's true. Even though it looks period and there is a total absence of modern finds it could definitely be a more recent drop.

That does look like a wing nut, but with that nice green patina I don't think its modern (I can't see any threads). But I don't think its colonial either. Could be a decorative piece of some sort. Guess I wasn't much help Ken.

Indeed!... 18th century wing nut. Seen here on a 18th century lacquered brass, reflecting telescope, by James Lynch of Dublin, c. 1770. Sound like a good place to prospect.

Awesome picture for reference to the wing nuts. I don't know why I didn't think that they had wing nuts in the 18th century. I just assumed they were a more recent invention but it make sense that they had them back then. Thanks for the information.

Colonial wing-nut, I agree. Very cool, not a very recent drop, does not look modern.
