I dug this in the same area I got two KG I half penny's, a blowhole, some tombac's and various flat buttons.

The front is silver plated and convex. The back is concave and the walls are the same thickness throughout.

I thought maybe it was a button, but I do not see anyplace a shank would have been attached. It also reminded me of an ornate saddle rivet or ornate tack for a saddle or carriage... but again, I dont see anyplace a rivet or tack would have been attached.

Any ideas?

Thank you all!

your whatzit is a part (lower burr) from old handcranked coffee mill/grain mill/pepper grinder.

Thank you. My concern is that it's silver plated and the base metal appears to be copper or some alloy like copper. It also 19mm or 3/4 inch in diameter, so its small. The silver plating is thin since you can see the base metal where it chipped off the design during cleaning.

Is silver plated copper too soft for a mill/grinder burr? I was trying to find a picture of one that looks like this, but they looked like they were iron.
