Hey y'all. Found this today at a colonial site near Charleston, SC. Its pretty roached. Hoping someone can identify some of the marks to identify if its a coin or a button.

Cool find. Hard to say for sure that it's NOT a button, but the "vibe" it gives to me is this: 17th century French billon douzain with a counterstamp. Now the counterstamp on these is typically a fleur de lis, but there were a few other types. Yours seems to be a cross. But it just seems to be the right coloring to be a billon (low grade silver) douzain, as well as right thickness and hammered shape.

Thanks coachbedford. It was found near some French hugenot plantations and after looking around some more and after your tip that it might be French, I think it could be a Louis XV one sou coin? I'll check the diameter but the mark that looks like a cross on one side and the remnants of a wreath or circular indentations on the reverse makes it look a lot like this...?

Even though the crossed sceptors might point to a 1767 sous, those coins are milled (nicely round) while the 17th century french douzains (as your coin appears to be) are hammered and thus irregular shaped. So I still think that is what your piece is. Though I guess a 1767 sous could get REALLY battered but your coin seems too hammered, too thin to be a 1767 sous.

Hey y'all. I think I finally solved this one. Almost positive the coin is a 1710-1712 French 6 deniers or "dardenne". Matches the time period of the site which was owned by a French family, size and markings match closely as well.

If it was dug on land it's hard for me to get there, because I've dug quite a few, and have seen a fairly high number of dug ones in general, and never recall one coming up looking anything close to that. Of course it's possible, but Id have to see clear matching markings to believe it.

Dug in tidal marsh along saltwater river bank. Most coppers, even pennies, come out covered in crust and paper thin.

ok, that's what I was wondering, and could definitely change things... but still about matching the detail. Shame it's so bad.

Yeah. I was thinking about buying a six deniers on eBay and trying to get an exact match from what's left on the coin. Ive seen some for around 15 bucks. I'll post some more pics in a few weeks if I can get a definitive match.

Judging by your picture your coin looks too large in diameter.
