I dug this up at a local park not to long ago with my Whites Classic 2. It came up sounding like a quarter and was about 3 inches deep. What a surprise. I brought it down to a local coin dealer who looked through his books but couldn't find it. He thought is was a Conn. copper but wasn't sure. It is about the size of a quarter, has a mans face looking right with writting around the coin. The back appears to have a woman churning butter, but it is so worn it is hard to tell. The park is located across the street from an Inn that George washington slept in in 1790.
I can only imagine that his troops were pitched out in what is the park today.
If anybody knows any tricks to make the coin look better please let me know.

My first thought was Hibernia copper...but the bottom of the bust is wrong, and the position of the arm on the reverse leads me to think not. I was also thinking Conn. Copper...but here is another possibility:

Colonial copper farthing from Great Britain. (Obviously not this variety, but you get the idea.) This will give you an idea on where to get a date. Take a piece of tissue paper and a piece of charcoal and do a light rubbing or see if you can make out a date. That will tell you more about which of these colonials it might be.

Here's a photo of the farthing:

I think this may be it. :o

I have searched so many books and you have found a the closest resemblance.
Thank you so much.

I would think a coin this worn is worthless in value, but is a nice keepsake.

Thanks again,
Al

There may very well be some rare varieties of the Conn. copper. Be sure to check before you try to do anything to the coin.
