Colonial buckle?????

I found this buckle at a site I just found today. I'm wondering if it is colonial I'm trying to date the site. I've never found a buckle like this before it doesn't seem to be brass. possibly pewter or tombac? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance - Justin
