Colonial buckle or later?

I found this buckle last fall. Im putting together a display of all my colonial buckles and I'm not sure about this one. It was found in a colonial context but there was also a large amount of 19th-20century contamination nearby. It has the old look to me but is not of a type commonly seen. Possibly colonial horse tack as it is quite heavy duty looking too

Due to the deep patina and the irregularities of the piece, I'd think 18th century. Great find.

Could be colonial, not a shoe or knee buckle though. Could be 19th century too though, those styles never changed much through the years.

I would class it as a belt/strap slide. As it has a wide hole for 2 thick leather straps it most likely went on a horse not person.
