Colonial Buckle from Hell.(Finally It's A Cool one TOO)

And I mean it too. >:( I oystered most of the day as the season is coming to a end.But stoped at a couple sites coming in.One was the site I found the 1669 his penny token & some of my earliest finds I've found buckles from the 1500's and such. But this buckle find had them all beat as far as the cleaning job.I've never seen a find so hard to get clean & it's still not. This stuff was on there Just like Concrete had to use a knife and took a hour & half to get it to the point it is.When I found it I broke it because I thought it was just a piece of Iron.Could not tell why the detector was ringing on it like it was.So I snaped it in too in my fingers looking for what it was.Only then did I see that it was a (buckle). Not able to find one on the UK site just like it so not sure of time frame but sure it's another early one. Also not sure what the stone item is.Anyway way it's been a day for me.A few finds for a short couple hunt's after a day of working.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Yea I'm not sure what caused it to do what it did. :icon_scratch: Nothing else has come from this site in that shape.Matter of fact most have come needing little to no cleaning.Must be what it's made of :icon_scratch:

I had to break out the big guns on this one. Even put it back together again. It was a challenge bring it back & fixing the break but I like a good challenge now & then. :headbang: Now that I have it back together I can work on getting the rest off.
List of steps it took. :D
1) Boiled in pieroxide & let dry
2) Chisled & pick at 2hrs. total & rinse
3) Dipped in muritc acid & rinse
4) lemon juice bath & rinse
5) Baking soda bath & rinse
6) 5min JB Weld
7) little left to do at futher date in time. :laughing7:

Pete, :hello:

Wow! :o

You were rewarded for your patience with an insanely cool relic! I looked at the picture of the item encrusted and thought, "that thing is too far gone". Boy, did you prove me wrong! I will definitely spend more time on encrusted relics after looking at your results. Well done!!

Re: Colonial Buckle from Hell.(Finally It's A Cool one TOO)

Way to go on resurrecting that sweet little buckle ! :icon_thumright:

Yea I try and pick my battles. :D Once I got started cleaning it I could see some of the design coming through. So I kept with it & got to noticing what looked like some signs of silver.Which alowed me to use some harsher cleaning ideas that helped speed up the job. It was still a booger though. :D

Re: Colonial Buckle from Hell.(Finally It's A Cool one TOO)

Just wanted to add that I figured out what the one item is (Graphite). Not sure what they were using it for to mold something hot :icon_scratch: Or to write with :icon_scratch: But it is what it is cause it will write on paper and is lite in weight for it's size. Will not read on the detector & is silverish in color when scratched on.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

It is thought that sometime before 1565, in fact some say before the 1500’s, a very large graphite deposit was discovered in England. The locals found that the graphite from the deposit was very useful to mark their sheep. The graphite was very unique in that it broke down into stick shapes, in was very pure and solid. Chemistry at this point in time was not well known and the graphite was referred to as lead, hence the term “lead pencil

Here's some in raw form just like my piece.

That is one ornate Colonial buckle, Pete. Great job on the restoration. I am proud of you. :notworthy: :hello2: I just have that odd feeling that you are going to do some cut silvers soon. The coast of NC is killer for Colonial! :headbang:
