Judging by the motif on the front, it looks to be more Victorian than Colonial. If it has a rim lip, it could have held a Cameo or some other type of stone. If you would post a photo of the back, showing the clasp, the era could be defined. Be sure to examine it with a loop to see if it is marked.

Neat find :)

I think Breezie's right that it held a cameo, or possibly an inlaid piece of jet, as these were the two most popular. Providing you didn't find it in a field, it might be worth your while to go back to the plug (if it was a lawn), and sift a little soil around it for the inlay.

Thank you breezy and johnyi . I think it was a cameo also . I dug this piece near a cellar hole deep in the woods. Ill have to go sift it. Here's a pic of the back sorry for the terrible pic.

I can see a lip, which would have held the stone, and looking at the clasp, the era would be Victorian. Hopefully you can find the stone.

Thank you breezie for your help. Jewelry is not my strong suit.

The metal might be Pinchbeck, popular during the 18th century, as it resembled Gold which allowed ordinary people to buy gold 'effect' jewelry on a budget.
