Was out in the Northern Neck of Virginia on Saturday in Lancaster,Virginia @ an old site that dates back to colonial period, the site from the insurance map I pulled up was pretty deep in the woods, took a good 20-30 minutes to get there and another hour before I finally hit a spot that was filled with iron - which indicates to me I was near the old house..

Spent over 4 hours hunting about an acre of this spot that was filllled with iron, these are the kind of spots i love to hit with iron everywhere because it tells me it was an old house site or something.. Lot of MDers just frustrated on spots with a-lot of iron but - if you take the time to hunt it slow you will find some stuff..

5 buttons - ranging from 1760s-1820s.

1st button on line up is a typical 1820s-1830s button (andrew jackson era)
2nd button on line up is a early button 1750s-1760s range
3rd is 1780s-90s floral button
The other 3 are 1790s-1820s buttons.

The buckle i am not 100% sure perhaps something like a sash buckle - i think it dates to the 1820s-1830s...

Lot of junk i dug also but boy - they sure did love their iron back then...

Oh on a off topic note.. I had this baby deer following me for ever and standing a few yards away and just watching me for the longest time... I have no idea what that was about? pretty kewl tho..

You're right HSD - its's all about the iron. That's the #1 thing I look for when I get into a field, and there are always a few goodies to be found no matter how many times its been hunted. Nice going on those late colonial and early 1800s finds.

Thanks Mr. Bill - Enjoying your finds you been posting lately!!! Best of luck down there further East of me!

HutSiteDigger,
Hope to see some coins come out for ya. Been in the same era site myself and actually got a "JACKSON VICTORY" button about a week ago. Gonna go look for a new site today, but if it doesn't pan out will be back to the old one. High grass, but every trip seems to get a find or two worth the trip. Love the buckle, but would have thought it was 1700's. Congrats.:icon_thumleft:

You know TN - I was thinking about that button yesterday thinking to myself "Man I hope one pops up" That would surely make my day.. And yah I been hitting some good sites out here in the Northern Neck lately that is producing basically just buttons and typical 18th-19th c. junk but have yet to find a coin recently - so hopefully my luck changes next weekend!! Thanks - Hut

Nice finds. A place like that has great potential for cut silver or early one piece military buttons. I found a button with the star and rays pattern like yours last month. Mine has a backmark that I can't make out, but I would date mine as 1820s/1830s.
