I really don't know what to look for in coke bottles.

Can anyone tell me about this bottle and what to look for in coke bottles.

About all I know is the early Hutch's and straight sided ones are usually worth the most. Certain specialty or commemorative's also command some good money. Just look at the completed listings on ebay to give you an idea of what is the most desirable. coke bottle | eBay

Thanks Diggumup, I'll keep an eye out for HUTCHINSON and Straight Coke bottles

So fat I have been able to figure out that mine is an old "hobbleskirt" variety bottle

I think they stopped putting cities on the bottoms in the late 50's. I have only found 1 straight sided coke in the wild at garage sales.

Epackage is the guy to talk to about Paterson, NJ bottles. He'll know if it's a scarce one or not. I'd send him a PM about it, or maybe he'll see this thread. In the meantime, look around the base near the thinnest part of the hobbleskirt (about where your thumb is in the picture), you should find some very small numbers that will indicate the year the bottle was made. Good luck with it!

Thank You! I have learned a lot so far.
IT has two numbers 47 and 48 at the thinnest part of the hobbleskirt.

I was just ready to email Epack myself...

Interesting tidbit:

Back when these bottles with city names were used, the bottles would get very mixed up between the bottlers. The bottles would 'travel' with the customer and often get returned at a different bottler. Of course, the Indianapolis Coke bottler didn't care if the bottle said Louisville on the bottom, they just wanted a bottle that they could clean, refill and sell to the next customer.

At that time, my grandfather worked in an auto parts manufacturing plant, and they would gamble on who would get the bottle that originated the farthest away. My grandfather said that most often, the bet would cost 10 cents to get you in the pool.

He won several times, and the total pot was about $20...a decent sum back in those days.

My dad did the same thing!!!!!!!!!! Did your grandfather perhaps work at Chevrolet Truck in Flint, MI?

My grandfather worked at a place called Arvin.

They manufactured car parts for the Big 3, mostly exhaust parts. Arvin got their start building tire pumps for the Model T, and developed the inline welded seam on steel tubing.

FWIW, Arvin also had a consumer household line, which included TV's, irons, fans, heaters and what most people know them for...radios.
