I was detecting near the north shore of Lake Erie today and one of the coins I dug up was the one in the picture. I can't tell if it is merely a flattened penny that has lost almost all its markings, or if this might be some type of token. Here is what I know: it is copper, approx. the same size as a penny, 1/3 the thickness (uniformly thin), smooth with nothing raised, nearly impossible to make out faint lettering and patterning. I'm inclined to think it might be a flattened penny, but I thought I'd get some opinions on here.

Thanks for the help! The one picture has it beside a regular penny for perspective.

I noticed this was your very first post Deaves - so, Welcome Aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

mick56 & 1320 stated my guess, is or was there a R.R. Track nearby?, Looks like a flattened penny, seen and picked up a lot of them on the job near crossings for years.
