This is made of copper and was found next to the Midland Valley Railroad tracks. I think the kids that used to live next to the tracks probably put it on the tracks to smash it. I've heard stories of people doing that and causing the train to jump the tracks! It is flattened pretty good but you can still see the numbers "25" on one side and the reeded edges from the coin/token. There is a "25" on the other side, too. No letters or anything else, though. Any help would be appreciated! regards~~~sandcreek4

Looks more like a poker chip... no idea and no help - neat find though by the tracks.
Thanks, Montana Jim--I never thought of a poker chip! Could be!! regards, sandcreek4

We used to do that with pennies as kids but I cannot see how it could cause a train to derail. We meant no harm. After the train passed the flattened pennies would be right there on the rail where we placed them. But we would be a couple of pennies poorer.

Yeah, what bigcy said and the pennies would be so hot you couldn't pick them up for a few seconds. That coin looks like it had a 25 on it, so maybe foreign coin? I don't think it is a quarter. I posted a RR spike some time back that had been run over by a train. My wife worked at a shortline and kids were always putting something on the track to see what the train would do to it.

Thanks Bigcypresshunter and Monty--The "coin" does have a 25 on it and can you see the reeded edges? which is what made me think it was a coin :icon_scratch:, maybe it IS a foreign coin. Thanks for looking, guys!! regards, sandcreek4

when i was a kid, we put old brass keys on the tracks.

after they were run over they still looked like keys, only a lot larger. a really neat effect.

today they would probably charge you with being a terrorist for doing that.

just like the old bag of burning dog poop on the porch gag, is in some places considered arson.

I'm surprised I didn't find more than one coin--the place (this was found) had four generations of kids and the house they lived in was right next to the railroad tracks. I also found an old Masons pennie out by the tracks, but it wasn't flattened.
You know that thing you said about the "burning dog poop"--its just NASTY! :D I'm not sure about it being arson, though :tongue3: Thank you for your comments, Dozer Dan!

times are changing. about 10 years ago, my youngest son (then 12) who has never been in trouble,

was seen putting a small "blackcat type" firecracker in the mailbox of the local town crank. i would be the first

one to punish him for a stunt like that (also the first one to pull a stunt like that 40 years ago,

allthough the firecrackers would probably have been thrown under the cleanout flap of the outhouse.) ;D

but the local cops started flexing muscle and was talking about filing felony charges just because they could.

it was a private owned mailbox but federal U.S. postal regs.

Isn't it funny how people blow things out of proportion? If the police would concentrate on the REAL criminals, we would all be better off. I hope your son didn't get into too much trouble! Sounds like he was just being a boy and didn't mean any harm! regards, sandcreek

One thing to remember about mailboxes. You go to the store and buy it and you own it. According to the Post Office, you only own the outside. The inside is federal property. That's why they get so "hot and bothered" about it. It's where the mail is and that is "protected" federal space.

Just the way is has always been.

Don't get me wrong--I don't condone tearing up a mail box in any way, shape or form, I just think this boy didn't mean any harm with a firecracker(just my opinion(please don't be offended by that). This is totally digressing from the original post, huh??? :help: :dontknow: I just wanted to know about my poor little coin!! :crybaby2: sandcreek4

That actually would be my guess to, I just couldn't find any pics with the reeded edge look. The closet I found was the jettons I posted above.

:icon_pirat: Some choo-choo smashed coins. Where I lived I picked up lots of smashed coins, toys and unidentifyable items. The two chineese coins in the center were NOT run over.
I needs a Grog! :coffee2:
