I've heard the names before.. both from people in this hobby and from those who really don't understand us (outside the hobby). "Treasure Hunters", "Beach Combers", "Coin Fishers".. "Weirdos".. well.. ok maybe not "Weirdos".. at least spoken out loud anyway. Then there are those that call us "Coin Shooters" and "Coin Collectors".. which is not entirely off the mark when you come to think of it. We all collect the coins. We may not keep them, but we collect them long enough to put them back into circulation. And it is that thought that brought me around to thinking of a new description for me and/or this hobby. We "Rescue" coins from oblivion or at least from a long hiatus from being passed from hand to hand or buyer to seller. Yeah.. I like that.. I "Rescue Coins". <laughing>
Well today I rescued a BUNCH of coins. A lot of Lincolns, mostly memorial but there was one lone Wheat (1950 S) along with a lone Canadian Penny. Here's old Abe with Queen Elizabeth II..
:
I found a bunch of Georges (Quarters), Some Jeffersons (clad nickles), a BUNCH of Rosies (clad dimes) and one Token for a local Skating Rink.. and One lonely little Indian Maiden.. a Sac Dollar..
:
Some of the pennies were a little worse for the wear however. It's really sad that we can to this day find coins that were struck over hundreds and hundreds of years ago that look nearly as good as the day they were first made.. but we have these "dissolving" pennies that the good old U.S. Of A. minted just a couple of decades ago. It's a crying shame really. *sigh*
Well this "Coin Rescue" didn't turn up JUST coins today. Actually I found a LOT of other stuff besides coins. It was a two part hunt today in a very busy and very big park here in Lexington Kentucky. Jacobson Park is on the outskirts of Lexington and is centered around one of the city's water reservoirs. There are six or seven picnic shelters with numerous standing grills and picnic tables scattered throughout the park. There are VolleyBall courts, Basketball courts, A very large "creative thinking" playground (woodchips!). There's a boat dock/launch where you can rent paddleboats if you don't have a sailboat or a canoe of your own. And ducks EVERY-FREAKIN-WHERE! <grin> Oh yeah, and you can fish from the bank anywhere in the park. There are Huge Open spaces where you can play soccer, fly kites, run your dog(s).. or just lay out with a blanket and catch some rays. You can find just about anything you want or need from a park here.. that's why it's so popular. There are always (in the warmer months anyway) family reunions, birthday parties, company picnics or something along those lines going on there. Today was no exception. Friday nights in the summer, one of the local television stations offers outdoor movies, called, Free Friday Flicks. They project the recently first run movies (mostly kid type movies) onto a huge outdoor screen at the bottom of a long sloping hillside. People bring their chairs, blankets and their kids and watch the movies (after the sun goes down). Hmmm a large gathering of people outdoors on blankets and in lawn chairs.. in the dark.. with kids running willy nilly.. with concessions.. Yeah! You know I'm there! Well, at least the next day or the first day I can get there after the movie anyway. This week it was Sunday morning. They didn't actually show the movie this weekend though, *sigh* due to inclement weather (rain earlier in the day and predicted rain that evening). There was, however, a big annual picnic for a charitable organization this afternoon. Of course that event was at the same locale as the free movies. Oh well.. they wont be there all day. I began the day in the late morning at the other end of the park, in the woodchips of the playground and the picnicking areas around it. Till more and more people started showing up.
After getting crowded out, even if in my own mind, I checked out the hillside again where the big Annual Picnic was being held. It was still busy, but they had a couple of big tents and a couple of those inflatable kiddie contraptions (castles, bouncy gym thingies), and lots of cars parked on the hillside. Alas, I was hungry and it was rather warm. I went home for lunch.
Later this evening I went back and the picnickers were all gone the inflatables all deflated and carted off, the tents were taken down and removed as well. Nothing to do but start detecting, again. I found quite a few coins, but very very few of them recent or on the surface. I found a LOT of pull tabs and other metal crap though, some on the surface, some not. I found a wide selection of "other stuff" throughout the day today as well. Glasses,
sunglasses,
rope!, keys, buttons, buckles, pens, a FORK,
....the remains of a cell phone?..
.. an earring, a bracelet (beaded) a little carved stone pendant (broken)..hair clasps, finger nail clippers, zipper pulls, shoe tags, bottle caps, the inevitable pull tabs of course... some plastic toys.. check out this little dude..
Oh.. and even three or four "binkies" (pacifiers).. all of them went into the garbage of course, only one pictured here. As you can see, my finds bag was FULL of stuff picked up from around the park, and that doesn't even mention the can slaw that never made it past the nearest garbage can.
Yeah, I had a pretty productive day of it.. rescuing coins.. and other "crap" <grin> My legs are tired, my back is tired, my hands and fingers are tired. That was a LOT of digging today, even if most of it was just under the grass roots. Here's all the coins.. all two hundred and twenty two of them (222)!!!
That's a LOT of Rescues!
Happy Hunting Everyone!
