I've heard the names before.. both from people in this hobby and from those who really don't understand us (outside the hobby). "Treasure Hunters", "Beach Combers", "Coin Fishers".. "Weirdos".. well.. ok maybe not "Weirdos".. at least spoken out loud anyway. Then there are those that call us "Coin Shooters" and "Coin Collectors".. which is not entirely off the mark when you come to think of it. We all collect the coins. We may not keep them, but we collect them long enough to put them back into circulation. And it is that thought that brought me around to thinking of a new description for me and/or this hobby. We "Rescue" coins from oblivion or at least from a long hiatus from being passed from hand to hand or buyer to seller. Yeah.. I like that.. I "Rescue Coins". <laughing>
Well today I rescued a BUNCH of coins. A lot of Lincolns, mostly memorial but there was one lone Wheat (1950 S) along with a lone Canadian Penny. Here's old Abe with Queen Elizabeth II..

I found a bunch of Georges (Quarters), Some Jeffersons (clad nickles), a BUNCH of Rosies (clad dimes) and one Token for a local Skating Rink.. and One lonely little Indian Maiden.. a Sac Dollar..

Some of the pennies were a little worse for the wear however. It's really sad that we can to this day find coins that were struck over hundreds and hundreds of years ago that look nearly as good as the day they were first made.. but we have these "dissolving" pennies that the good old U.S. Of A. minted just a couple of decades ago. It's a crying shame really. *sigh*

Well this "Coin Rescue" didn't turn up JUST coins today. Actually I found a LOT of other stuff besides coins. It was a two part hunt today in a very busy and very big park here in Lexington Kentucky. Jacobson Park is on the outskirts of Lexington and is centered around one of the city's water reservoirs. There are six or seven picnic shelters with numerous standing grills and picnic tables scattered throughout the park. There are VolleyBall courts, Basketball courts, A very large "creative thinking" playground (woodchips!). There's a boat dock/launch where you can rent paddleboats if you don't have a sailboat or a canoe of your own. And ducks EVERY-FREAKIN-WHERE! <grin> Oh yeah, and you can fish from the bank anywhere in the park. There are Huge Open spaces where you can play soccer, fly kites, run your dog(s).. or just lay out with a blanket and catch some rays. You can find just about anything you want or need from a park here.. that's why it's so popular. There are always (in the warmer months anyway) family reunions, birthday parties, company picnics or something along those lines going on there. Today was no exception. Friday nights in the summer, one of the local television stations offers outdoor movies, called, Free Friday Flicks. They project the recently first run movies (mostly kid type movies) onto a huge outdoor screen at the bottom of a long sloping hillside. People bring their chairs, blankets and their kids and watch the movies (after the sun goes down). Hmmm a large gathering of people outdoors on blankets and in lawn chairs.. in the dark.. with kids running willy nilly.. with concessions..??? Yeah! You know I'm there! Well, at least the next day or the first day I can get there after the movie anyway. This week it was Sunday morning. They didn't actually show the movie this weekend though, *sigh* due to inclement weather (rain earlier in the day and predicted rain that evening). There was, however, a big annual picnic for a charitable organization this afternoon. Of course that event was at the same locale as the free movies. Oh well.. they wont be there all day. I began the day in the late morning at the other end of the park, in the woodchips of the playground and the picnicking areas around it. Till more and more people started showing up.
After getting crowded out, even if in my own mind, I checked out the hillside again where the big Annual Picnic was being held. It was still busy, but they had a couple of big tents and a couple of those inflatable kiddie contraptions (castles, bouncy gym thingies), and lots of cars parked on the hillside. Alas, I was hungry and it was rather warm. I went home for lunch.
Later this evening I went back and the picnickers were all gone the inflatables all deflated and carted off, the tents were taken down and removed as well. Nothing to do but start detecting, again. I found quite a few coins, but very very few of them recent or on the surface. I found a LOT of pull tabs and other metal crap though, some on the surface, some not. I found a wide selection of "other stuff" throughout the day today as well. Glasses,

sunglasses,

rope!, keys, buttons, buckles, pens, a FORK,

6-22-08 014Buttons.jpg

....the remains of a cell phone?..

6-22-08 012Cell.jpg

.. an earring, a bracelet (beaded) a little carved stone pendant (broken)..hair clasps, finger nail clippers, zipper pulls, shoe tags, bottle caps, the inevitable pull tabs of course... some plastic toys.. check out this little dude..

6-22-08 010Dude.jpg

Oh.. and even three or four "binkies" (pacifiers).. all of them went into the garbage of course, only one pictured here. As you can see, my finds bag was FULL of stuff picked up from around the park, and that doesn't even mention the can slaw that never made it past the nearest garbage can.

Yeah, I had a pretty productive day of it.. rescuing coins.. and other "crap" <grin> My legs are tired, my back is tired, my hands and fingers are tired. That was a LOT of digging today, even if most of it was just under the grass roots. Here's all the coins.. all two hundred and twenty two of them (222)!!!

That's a LOT of Rescues!

Hey Frodov, Great post as usual and what a haul ! I absolutely agree with you about the pathetic zinc

pennies . Here we are on the eve. of Abraham Lincoln's 200-th anniversery (birth year) ,The least we

could do as Americans , would be to honor this great man with an excellent coin . I hope our mint

officials share this view. Thanks again for the passionate post's and pics. Gregory, Santa Fe.

Super Day and nice clad count as well!! Congrats!

I've heard rumors of a "drive" to have the lowly penny revamped. I would hope that it would mean a change in the make up or materials that they are made of rather than just a simple redesign of the artwork involved. Anyone out there heard of any movements being organized? Let me know, I'll sign a petition!

Im saving all my partially dissolved penny to make a cache for some other MD'er to find :) I have about $1.00 worth already...

cheers

I concure.... :D ;D I am only 28 years Old I was born well after they stopped making coins of silver. I feel money is just not money today. :-\ ??? They should not even call it money, they should call it pulltabs. :icon_scratch: ;D Seeing how aluminum is likely worth more. :D I heard they are going to make a new penny but I don't think they had plains to change the alloy. :icon_scratch: :icon_study: It would be cool if they put silver back in quarters even 10-40% would be cool. 8) They do make proof sets that are 90% silver you can get from coin dealers or the mint every year. Money needs to be money again.... >:( oh well.

Nice haul,

Keep @ it and HH!! :D

Actually, even as sad and ugly as they may be, any and all banks still have to accept them for full face value. I've rolled and "cashed in" probably about thirty dollars worth of them over the past year or so. I *did* stop cleaning them in the tumbler though. <hanging head in shame> Yes yes, it's true... I was so gung ho in this hobby when I first started out that I went all out and got a nice Lortone rock and coin tumbler. I cleaned nearly every coin I found at first. You think those dissolving memorial pennies look ugly when you pull them out of the ground, you should see them after they've spent 24 hours in a rock/coin tumbler polisher! <shudder>

I have to admit, it was a fairly good day of detecting, however, I've had much better days.. as well as those days that you only seem to find pull tabs and bottle tops. <shrug> My best day ever was a couple of weeks ago when I stumbled into a HUGE bunch of clad quarters that had been "seeded" into the sand of a volleyball court. I think that someone tried to keep their kids occupied with "treasure hunting" looking for those quarters rather than have them wander off down by the lakeshore. I found 96 quarters in that one afternoon, over $24.00 in quarters alone. <grin> now THAT was a SUPER DAY. <grin>

222 coins in one day would put me in the hospital with my back.lol
I wish that on your next outing that you find a nice gold coin.

GOLD!!?? My Friend! You are too generous! <smiling> I would love to find a gold coin.. or even a gold ring. *(have found a couple of those, albeit they were small)* I'd be happy to find some older silver coins to be honest though. I've only found a couple of silver coins so far, and they were only dimes, Rosie's at that. <shrug> Still though, silver is silver. But GOLD!? I'll keep looking!

Happy Hunting!

That is an incredible haul! I too am always amazed at how zinc pennies do so so so poorly after just a little time in the ground. Great finds, thanks for sharing!

Great haul Frodov! I can't believe you found all that in one park! I'd have to visit 10 tot lots to find 200 coins. Thanks for rescuing all those coins.

I know what you mean about having to hunt several locales to garner that many coins. I've had it lucky the past month or so at this particular park, due to the warmer weather and the popularity of the park. In the colder months it's not nearly as productive.

Happy Hunting.
