I found a very unusual coin-like object the other day. It is made from iron, as determined by my son, and is heavily rusted. Appears to have a stick figure on it. I'm not sure if it's a stick figure or if that's what the rust did.

I tried to remove the rust with a little LA's totally awesome, but decided to stop because I wasn't sure what kind of damage I could cause. It's larger than a quarter, it's roughly 27.4 mm in diameter and 7.2 grams. I tried to bring out a little more detail in photoshop, but not sure it helped.
Any clue? I found it in NW Georgia in an area known for gold mines.

I haven't posted here in a bit, so if the images don't upload properly, please forgive me. I'll edit it

Edit to add:

It was found near a grave from around the 1830s in a relatively undisturbed area (not publicly accessible, i.e. my property) that has eroded away from rain and deer walking on my trails over time. I regularly maintain my trails and this was not there when I first cut them in last year. I also found smooth balls of iron in low pockets throughout my property.

No problem seeing the larger version once I clicked on the photo.
You can edit, then click on the photo, then it will show an option for full version.

The find kind of reminds me of a large electrical panel knock out.

That's usually galvanized steel. This is definitely iron. I should add that it was found near a grave from the 1830s. Near, definitely not in. I'm not digging those...and this was in an area that had eroded away. I have enough bad luck! haha! Plus, that would not be legal, I think.

I have been told they used to put large coins or other round type objects over deceased peoples eyes .when they buried them

Right, my husband is in the steel industry. This is iron. Not a galvanized knockout. If it were galvanized, it wouldn't be rusted. Also, I don't have galvanized steel boxes in my house. Not even original boxes. All plastic.
Galvanized steel/iron is one thing, and galvanized sheet or other items are another.
The steel/iron is treated/dipped in zinc.
Sheet or other items (electrical box knock outs) are produced using an electrogalvanizing method.
This coating of zinc is thin, will rust in a few years.
I've dug knock outs where the rust is creeping in from the edge to the entire slug is as your example.

What is the average thickness and how does that compare to that of a knockout?

With the smooth balls of iron found I wonder if there was a foundry or something on the property years ago. Consider looking at a history book, old maps and aerials.
