I found this coin today and need help IDing it.
IT's pretty worn. I washed it off as I thought it was a token at first.
Also, any advice on getting the crud off to bring out would also be appreciated.
Thank you all
Just to the top left of the head are the letters "II" I beleave

I could be wrong about the II - I live in western MA in the US. although I suppose it's possible

Based on the figure, it is definitely an Italian 5 centesimi. The "II" is positioned towards the downward part of the head, in the spot of the where the II was on the dug coin (I know the Napoleon was a III, but I knew that you could mistake the number, since the coin is corroded). On the VEII, the hair is a bit more sticking up than the NIII, similar in look to the dug coin. Finally, the sharp angle between the mustache and the head +neck is well seen, which is only present in a VEII. So your coin was minted between 1861-1867. I also attached Krause values for your coin.

I looked at it through an "eyeclops", great toy/microscope. The II looks like an L I to me know but that could also be wrong.

Does anyone recommend electrolysisto get the rest of the crud off.

Every feature of the coin fits with the 5 centesimi, including the position of the II. I am not an expert on cleaning.

I could tell what it was because I have the 1,5, and 10 centesimi from that time period.

How does it look now after cleaning? In the 1870s, the population of Italians in the US was approximately 165,000.
