I dug this strange coin about two years ago along the Mohawk river fording place and to this day still have'nt figured it out

About the size of a LG cent on the front is a plough ( plow ) but it is'nt a Jersey or Vermont copper.

On the reverse is what looks like a screw or a key and there is lettering above and below the key/screw object but can only make out a letter 'I'-'R'

Coin has no date on it

I've looked thru a few hundred hard times tokens but no luck.

So I turn to the Tnet experts....

Glad I could help. I used to collect Hard Times tokens.

Incidentally, there are also a couple of Canadian blacksmith tokens (maybe more) with the same "screw" reverse.

Mr PBK THANK YOU...mystery solved!

I had a inkling it was from the hard times token family and I've been through many photos and token reference books but never found it.
The dang thing has been in olive oil for just about the two years I've had it and recently just got to the point where I could see more detail and the lettering.

So thank you for your expertise ;) I am humbled in your greatness !!

Much Appreciated !

D.

Don just woke up and saw this post Derek, without the Hard Time Tokens books, kind of hard ID ing most of them. I was going to say if no one ID'd it that I found a Hard Times token many years ago that I to was a bit confused, and in fact at first thought it was another NJ copper found by me till I got home.

Mine too had a plow on it, but it was not a NJ copper, but mine had a date and as soon as I saw the date In knew what it was, just did not know which one till I cleaned it, and it was not in good shape and still is not in good shape.
