COIN GUYS - Need some opinions on this one... I got a "mystery" coin for you guys...

Opinions anyone... ?

I saw this and was like... wait a minute... something is wrong with this picture...
It really screwed me up when I first picked this one up.
I thought I had lost my mind... I kept flipping it over and back over...

In fact it is still screwing me up... I am thinking a "round" ? ? ?
A miss strike ?
A fake ?
A what the hell ?

Found a similar awhile back on ebay... but was not same... and I have not looked again.

Saved this one for you guys to figure out. :)

I saw a TV program about a guy who uses high tech machinery to do things just like that to a coin. He can cut the back out of the original and put another coin in there. And he does it so well you can't tell the difference. But he always (?) tells that they are fakes. Check the face around the edge to see if it is an insert. Just guessing, mind you.

Looks to be a Liberty (1878-1921) reverse. Real or faked, cool find!

No real signs of a "tampering" off the bat.
Will put a serious micro on it if no one can I.D. this crazy coin.

Damn thing is "right as rain"... CEPT for... the obvious. heh

The 1861 one dollar coin was not minted in New Orleans; 1860 was the last year of the seated liberty being minted in NO.
The reverse of your 'coin' is from the design of a Morgan dollar (1878-1921). Your coin is a fantasy piece--IMO.
Don.....

AARC,

It's a neat conversation piece....have it mounted in a bezel and wear it as a pendant.

Actually...
I was thinking of carrying it in my pocket on a daily basis...
As a "flip" coin...
And a piece to freak out a coin guy here and there in my travels.

At a flea market or something... "Hey you wanna buy a Seated Morgan" ? ...
They may reply "there is no such thing"...

At which time I will say "wanna bet" ?

I don't know what it means but check out the seated side look at the dentacles at 4 o'clock. Also check out the dots on the stars at 9 and 10 o'clock or so weird

Not to mention that the 61 in the date looks kind of weird especially when compared to other 1861 dollars

No way... You actually got the 1861-O, small 8 variety.
Awesome!
