it's been 3 1/2 yrs.since i found my last 1/2$'s & i found 3 in the last mth.(only 5 total).i found these today in an athletic field.they were both(not together)in approx. 3" of packed soil, but 1 is shiny the other isn't(similar to any other clad that has been in the grd.for a while).a hole was drilled in it.i have searched the interweb for a special issue silver or clad that yr., DSCN2136.webpthere was none.there is some type of clad cover on this coin or it would age just like the other.any info? thanx

Maybe chemicals such as fertilizer discolored the 71 ?

maybe it's just my computer, but the '79 looks like it was once gold plated

that's what i'm trying to fig.out, there is some type of plating on it to keep it shiny.i've never found a clad coin that had been in the grd.for awhile that didn't look similar to the '71.there were no special issues that yr......that i can find info on.when i 1st spotted it,i was sure it was some kind of silver content.on closer inspection after cleaning,it's not.

I used to see lots of Kennedy halves at flea markets that were gold plated and set in necklaces and belt buckles. with that one being holed, my impression is that it was probably once in a buckle or something and some kid put a hole in it to wear as a necklace.

I have always thought that those big coins found at athletic fields were used for the coin toss by the Umpire. Great to find that many half dollars, I have only found three in five years myself. Sub8-)
