Very common with the garbage Zinc cents made after 1982. 50 years from now there will be nothing for our kids to find. Just part of our "new improved" disposable society. aka everything made from crap eventually turns back to crap... Nothing ate it. It's corrosion.
Shhhh.. the tree huggers will try to ban metal detecting because we are disturbing the worm habitat..No. That is classic worm damage. Worms have struggled to survive for eternity, but now, with zinc to supplement their diets, they are thriving, and are now off the "species of special concern" list.
Take it down to a salt water beach so you can reunite it with all their brothers and sisters.I found this penny today. I know it sounds silly but can worms really eat coins?
