coin depth question...

I have kind of a general question question for everyone... And a more specific one for anyone using an f-70.
What would you say is the average depth of coins you dig? And also how deep is the deepest coin you've dug?

I know soil mineralization and things like that can effect depth.... I've used my f-70 for a few months now and have yet to dig a coin at more than 5 inches. Pretty concerned a buried a silver quarter at about 7 or 8 inches and barely heard a thing...
Any setting suggestions, comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Depth for me would be anywhere from 1"-12" (farm fields)

Suggestions... Just like any other detectector - High sens., low disc., experience, and listen.

PS.... French buried coins won't give as good of a signal because of the disturbed ground. My explorer definitely likes the things that have been there a while.

Thanks for the info patch. I usally run with the disc set up a little, right above iron. But I'll try no disc my next time out.. It's not like I'm getting a quite hunt at the places I'm hitting anyway, most are pretty trashy. I hear ya on the freshly buried coins, but I was really thinking that that much silver would sing above 10". Anyways I'll keep you posted I planned on pulling a copper or two at 14" this week anyway so....
I appreciated the response.

I use a little disc.. It's a better balance then digging too much iron and making poor use of your time. Some detectors you can run zero and let your ears sort out the mess, so dropping down wouldn't make a whole lot of difference. (The GTI is one for example)

Yea you can run zero discrim on the f70. Which I'm fine with... It's the At I don't really like because it's uses a singalong tone for all signals. I'll keep posted, hopefully in today's finds, of how things are going. But I think Im just gotta keep at it and wait to swing over the right target.

Yeah that's what to do. I've been at this a bit over ten years and have had both my hot and cold times. I've been fortunate to get over that "right target" quite a few times and no matter what lead up to it, it was always worth it. One find or one site can make your, day, week, month, year, or even lifetime! I'm still waiting for the lifetime one. ;D

Yea I've been pretty fortunate in my first few months on mding.. Learning as I go. I mean my first real" find was a half cent and I had never even known it existed. I love everything about the hobby and I'm def hooked. I've had I few awesome finds, I guess that's why the depth is bothering me, obviously I don't want to think I'm walking over something that should be in my box. After not hitting that quarter I just haven't been able to stop thinking about it. With all the research and field time, to only dig what's in the first 5" esp. with what fisher says the f70 is capable of. But I plan to keep at it, and have some sites in the work to hopefully get a find that makes my year!

If your sites and area is old enough for a George II Halfpenny you will make many good finds if you stick with it, and put the effort it. That is the age range of find I consider prime time and know very good things are possible when I see one of those in the dirt!

That georgie actually popped out of the yard, but the house is only from 1900 and nothing else that old has shown up, next thing was the 1828 half cent. But I'm at 4 coppers so far I guess since feb or march and hope they keep coming! Reading your posts here and some of these other pa guys keep my hunting goals high!

Patch, I'm a bit confused by what you mean by this. Why French coins specifically and where are you likely to find freshly buried French coins?

Typo... French for fresh.

I have found many French coins but definitely not any freshly buried ones. (but do sound that way if the field was just plowed or tilled)

I have found barber dimes 14" deep many times over. Where I live we have this very soft black soil. Even in the middle of summer the soil crumbles.

What MD were you using?.....

What MD were you using?.....I use my Fisher cz-5 and cz-70. I use headphones with the highest sensitivity I can find. I have found several silvers at that depth. They are very very faint but solid signals. The more I would dig the stronger the signals would get. Our soil here is the blackest soil. My Dad has the same metal detector and could not find them. Then one day I found one at 12" and let him listen to the sound. Now he is finding them too.

Hi F70, What kind of mineralization are you experiencing in your part of Pennsylvania? I am primarily using a Fisher CZ and notice I will loose depth in "hot" ground". Some guys make the mastake of hunting with their sensitivity cranked all the way up at full blast. That's like putting your high beams on in the fog. Make a test garden, plant some silver coins at different depths. Experiment with sens, disc, etc.

The F70 is not a deep machine, it's a great target-separating machine and readily id's coins to it's max depth. For me, that's about 8" max.

Haven't hunted with anyone else using one yet, so don't know if I'm missing something in the setup, but cranked out or calmed down, it's just flat out not nearly as deep as the CZ series, the White's or the Minelabs.

If you can prove you're hitting a 14" dime, I know several folks that would give you $2000+ for your $600 machine.

How about a video?

Are you saying on your CZ5, you're using more than 6 sensitivity and it improves your depth?

It a deal! I do not turn my sensitivity up past 5. I am telling you guys its the soil we have. More like black sand. 20's and 30's pennies are about 10" deep. When it rains for several days we have standind water on top. I am not saying I find them that deep all the time. Just at the old parks around my town. Guys around here with minelabs find them just as deep.

Based on park and beach experiences, usually between 1 and 4 inches.
